W.T. Dahl founded Dahl's Foods in 1931, on Des Moines' east side, with an investment of just $600.00 and a 1,000 square foot facility. In those early days, sales volume averaged $200.00 per week. The first Dahl's supermarket, on the corner of Beaver and Franklin avenues, opened in 1948 with the first supermarket bakery between the Mississippi River and the Rocky Mountains.
Our Ingersoll store opened in 1952 with a scratch bakery, pharmacy, and a lunch counter, which was very uncommon grocery store amenity for that era. Until 1963, sacked groceries were transported underground to the small brick "Dahl House" in the corner of the parking lot, where customers drove up to claim their groceries with a numbered claim check. We have a history of providing customer conveniences. The worlds first test using debit cards for grocery purchases took place in 1981 at our Fleur Drive store, and by 1983 ATM 'Point of Sale' terminals were installed at all Dahl's stores. Building on our 70 year heritage of conveniences and service, we look forward to making further improvements to uphold our reputation as "the markets designed with you in mind," and to serving future generations of satisfied Dahl's customers.
