A good melon should give with slight pressure. If rock hard, don't buy it. Also, avoid melons with lumps or soft spots, as these indicate overripeness. When the crenshaw is ripe, it gives off a spicy fragrance. the skin will be springy but not mushy. Store ripe melons in the refrigerator up to five days.
